Sitka Sound holds one of the highest concentrations of wintering humpback whales in Southeast Alaska — animals that migrate roughly 3,000 miles from Hawaiian waters and return each year to the same herring-rich channels.
The town sits on Baranof Island, facing the open Pacific rather than the sheltered Inside Passage. That geography matters.
